Lily's Caterpillar

In the midst of our kitchen painting project, I had the crazy idea to let Lily make a caterpillar out of cardboard tubes. It wouldn't have been crazy, except that the kitchen table was temporarily in the foyer with NO room to walk around it easily. So this caterpillar was a major feat. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the finished caterpillar before it got damaged by a certain little brother who lives around here.... But Lily was VERY proud of her caterpillar. She painted four cardboard tubes each a different color and cut out paper flowers to go in between the body sections. Everything was strung on fishing line, and she glued buttons onto one of the paper flowers to make the face. It was very cute.

Painting the Kitchen

Painting the kitchen took FOREVER. There are sooooo many windows, so there was a lot of cutting in. We painted it a color called "Burnished Bronze." It's kind of a tan/bronze/gold/green. And it all depends on the light. I don't have an "after" picture handy right now, I'll get to it eventually.

The Royal Ball

All the princes and princesses were invited to the Royal Ball, where we played the Disney station on Pandora for the music.  While the princess was at the Ball, Daddy was in the kitchen cleaning up from dinner and getting ready for cake and ice cream.

Princess Pinata

We filled the princess castle pinata with mini candy bars and added some extra ribbons on the bottom so there would be enough for all the kids to grab one.  Daddy hung the pinata in the living room, hanging from the banister upstairs.  In the first picture you can also see the big mylar balloon castle tied to the railing of the stairway.  Everyone grabbed hold of a ribbon and pulled all together at the same time, and the candy came falling down.  Lily scooped up a whole bag full of candy, and Dylan knew exactly what the pinata was all about - he picked up one little piece of candy and put it in his bag.  I'm sure he would have gathered more, but the older kids were obviously much faster than him.

Birthday Party Festivities

Lily's party was full of fun and games... When kids began arriving, we had princess coloring pages in the dining room and foam crowns in the kitchen for them to decorate with stick-on jewels and gems.  The pizza arrived earlier than expected, so we went ahead and ate dinner after these two activities.  After the pizza, we had a mermaid race where the mermaids and mermen had green streamers tied around their legs so they couldn't walk like humans, and they had to hop to the finish line.  Lily was the fastest mermaid!  After the mermaid race, the kids helped Cinderella find her missing glass slipper.  I had spray-painted an old pair of shoes silver for the glass slippers; we hid one of them and kept the other in the open to show them what they were looking for.  It took longer than I expected, but eventually Gideon and Gisele found the slipper under the couch.  After Cinderella's slipper was found, we played Kiss the Frog.  Similar to pin the tail on the donkey, each child was blindfolded and turned in a circle before taping their paper lips onto the frog I had drawn on poster board.  After I spun Gisele around, she reached out and planted her paper lips right smack on the frog's mouth!  Even Dylan played Kiss the Frog.  Prizes for all the party games were a choice of a princess fruit snack or a lollipop.
